September 6, 2023 – Sarasota

Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast invites the public to register for an upcoming Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification course. The three-day training will occur from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on October 9-11 at the organization’s Bay Preserve Headquarters in Osprey. The course will be facilitated by SOLO Wilderness Medicine instructor, Catherine Jean, and focuses on improvising with limited resources in remote and wilderness emergency situations.

“We are excited to provide this training opportunity to our community,” says Christine P. Johnson, president of Conservation Foundation. “Many of our constituents find themselves in remote settings when pursuing their outdoor hobbies. We are excited to offer this course and help ensure they have the skills needed if and when emergency situations arise.”

Wilderness First Aid training is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts; those who travel internationally or to remote areas for fieldwork, business, or pleasure; homesteaders and those wanting to be more self-sufficient; those living in rural locations; students in the medical field who would like hands-on training; and anyone who would like to learn first aid skills. The three-day course will cover topics such as recognizing and effectively managing a medical emergency, treating various injuries, bleeding and infection control, splinting fractures, and handling environmental emergencies such as heat exhaustion, lightning strikes, drowning, snake bites, and more.

The instructor, Catherine Jean, is a licensed urban and Wilderness EMT, a SOLO Wilderness First Aid and First Responder instructor, and an AHA and Red Cross CPR instructor. She works with Alachua County Fire Rescue and has extensive experience instructing individuals of all ages.

Course registration is $350 per person. Upon completion, participants will receive nationally recognized SOLO WFA and CPR certification cards valid for two years. This course also serves as a WFR recertification for SOLO WFRs. Registration is open to those aged 13 and up. Participants under 16 must attend with a parent or guardian. Space is limited and registration is required.
