August 7, 2023 – Sarasota

Urbanite Theatre, Sarasota, Florida’s premiere destination for bold, contemporary black-box theater, announces its 2023/24 season, which includes four main productions.

The 2023/24 Season will feature four productions that shed light on predisposed prejudice and explore the importance of perspective. “The 2023/2024 Season marks a milestone for Urbanite, as it will be our 10th season. Over the past decade, Urbanite has remained steadfast in its commitment to bringing the boldest voices and new works to Sarasota,” says Producing Artistic Director Summer Wallace. “Season X is no different and will feature a Regional Premiere and three World Premieres. The season captures the intricacies of the human experience, weaving together tales of mystery, loneliness, love, identity, and resilience.”

Urbanite’s main productions start with the regional premiere of the 2020 Tony-nominated play, THE SOUND INSIDE, by Adam Rapp (October 20 – December 3, 2023). With direction by Kristin Clippard, this critically-acclaimed, suspense-filled drama explores the limits of an unsuspecting friendship between student and professor.

Next, Urbanite Theatre will present a touching narrative about mistaken identity and finding one’s worth. JUDITH by Katie Bender will be directed by Brendon Fox (January 5 – February 18, 2024). The one-woman show featuring Olivia Scanlon follows Judith as she transforms herself in an attempt to protect the reputation of her brother, William. JUDITH is presented in partnership with THT Repertory, starring Olivia Scanlon.

Following themes of perspective and self-identity, the season continues with the winner of the 2023 Urbanite Theatre Modern Works Festival, WESTMINSTER, by Brenda Withers (March 22 – April 28, 2024). Under the direction of Urbanite Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, Summer Wallace, this part morality play, part screwball romp digs into “acceptable” social prejudices and the consequences of leaving those biases unchecked.

The world premiere of OAK, written by Terry Guest and directed by Mikael Burke, will conclude the 2023/24 season at Urbanite Theatre (May 31 – June 30, 2024). Audiences may remember Guest’s hit work, AT THE WAKE OF A DEAD DRAG QUEEN, from Urbanite’s 2021/22 season. A recipient of the 2020 Charles Rowan Beye New Play Commission, the gripping Southern Gothic story OAK will have audiences on the edge of their seats.

“Each play will transport you to new realms, make you think, make you laugh, and leave you feeling inspired,” says Wallace.
