Under sunny skies and warm winds, the Sarasota Bay Cup Regatta, one of the largest regattas on the west coast of Florida, took place on Sarasota Bay on Saturday April 15.
Hosted by the Bird Key Yacht Club, 67 boats, comprising One Design and PHRF racing classes, participated as their captains and crew harnessed the winds on Sarasota Bay in pursuit of racing honors.
Colorful Sunfish, Flying Scots, E-Scows and Melges 15’s, joined by various PHRF multi-hull boats were among the sailing vessels that enjoyed the day and the thrill of competition as they raced along the water surface.
Fourteen Sailing Clubs participated from as far away as Newport, Rhode Island, Rochester, New York, and Minnetonka, Minnesota with western Florida sailing organizations from Venice, Naples and Bradenton and Sarasota enthusiastically represented.
Sunfish Class captains had more than a share of Olympic level sailors plying their craft on Sarasota bay.
Following the races, over 200 enthusiastic participants gathered at the Bird Key Yacht Club to celebrate their sport, the day of competition and their shared love of sailing and comradeship. They enjoyed a feast prepared by the Bird Key Yacht Club culinary team, led by Executive Chef Richard Mendoza. All enjoyed Chef Mendoza’s culinary wizardry as awards were later presented to race winners,
Doug Fisher and crew, piloting a PHRF Multi-Hull was the Sarasota Bay Cup Winner with Bird Key Yacht Club member and Regatta Co-chair Marvin Quin and crew claimed the coveted Price Cup. Toasts and good wishes were exchanged as winners and participants were celebrated and thoughts turned to next year.
