September 7 – Sarasota
Weekly hands on science classes are returning at the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab in October. STEAM Saturdays classes provide students from grades 1-12 with a unique opportunity to explore various science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) areas through engaging activities and using high-tech Fab Lab equipment such as laser cutters, vinyl cutters, 3D printers and more.
Among returning class themes are Engineering, Art & Design, Battlebots, Coding, and Chemistry. Exciting new classes exploring Architecture, Forensics, Web Development and Music have been added.
Classes to suit all ages and interests are available. Activities range from designing and building a laser cut tiny home in “Architecture” class to discovering the science of baking cookies in “Food Science” class (taste tests included). No experience is required. Classes run weekly from 9 am-1 pm beginning Saturday, October 1. Each session is $40 and includes all supplies and take-home projects. Registration is now open, but limited spaces are available, and sessions sell out quickly. For the full schedule and more information, visit https://suncoastscience.org/steam-saturdays.
STEAM Saturdays classes are developed and led by high school students from the lab’s Student Planning & Education Committee (SPEC), an innovative leadership program that empowers students to pursue their interests while making learning fun and engaging for students of all ages. With support from Fab Lab staff and trained educators, SPEC students learn how to design curriculum, prototype activities, train support volunteers and manage a classroom.
