Renowned Rabbi in Sarasota for Scholar-in-Residence Weekend

One of America’s most quoted rabbis and thought leaders, Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin, will join Temple Sinai for its annual Scholar-in-Residence weekend on March 4 and 5, 2022.  Rabbi Salkin, who is known for his writing, teaching and activism, will focus on the timely and relevant theme of healing, an important topic after almost two years of the Covid 19 pandemic. Our personal and collective experiences, not encountered by previous generations, has shaken many of us to our core.

Rabbi Salkin says, “Tikkun — repair — has emerged as a theme in the world, and especially in the Jewish world, largely as the result of the brokenness of our lives. COVID has ravaged our bodies, our souls, and our sense of community. No wonder we seek opportunities to heal and repair ourselves, and our communities.”

Rabbi Salkin has a national and international reputation.  His words have been cited in The New York Times, The New Republic and USA Today. He has appeared on television and radio programs, and has spoken in more than a hundred communities, including Israel, Great Britain, Cuba and Poland. He writes an opinion column, Martini Judaism (for those who want to be shaken and stirred), for the Religion News Service.  Several of his books have won national awards. He is the author of Putting God on the Guest List: How to Reclaim The Spiritual Meaning of Your Child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Rabbi Salkin serves as senior rabbi at Temple Israel of West Palm Beach.

• Friday, March 4, 5:15 p.m. – Welcome Reception in the Temple Sinai Atrium
• Friday, March 4, 6:00 p.m. – Rabbi Salkin will join Rabbi Samantha Kahn and Chazzan Cliff Abramson for Temple Sinai’s Erev Shabbat Service
• Friday, March 4, 7:00 p.m. – Rabbi Salkin will present Tikkun HaNefesh (Repairing the Soul): “Fixing the Broken Hallelujah,” an intimate encounter with the theology and poetry of Leonard Cohen.
• Saturday, March 5, 11:00 a.m. – Rabbi Salkin will present Tikkun Elohim: “The Hidden Meaning of Kaddish.” It is Judaism’s greatest hidden truth, and it has been staring us in the face for almost a thousand years. You might know how to say Kaddish, but you will never experience it the same way again.
• Saturday, March 5, 1:00 p.m. – Rabbi Salkin will present Tikkun Olam: “How Jews Get Woke:” A Master Class in Talmud. If you’ve never studied Talmud before, this funny and inspirational session is about how to seek social justice in our communities.
