Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Provider at 360 Orthopedics 

The daughter of a college football coach, Dr. Julie Barre grew up an athlete. Inspired by watching team doctors and trainers during football games, she studied for a degree in physical therapy and then eventually went to medical school. Dr. Barre has served as team physician for collegiate basketball teams, high school football teams, and a professional hockey team.

“Being part of a healthy family and living a healthy lifestyle made me gravitate to a career in medicine and orthopedics,” she said. “I played high school sports, college intramural, and continue to be active to this day. I like to practice what I preach.”

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine provider at 360 Orthopedics in Sarasota, Venice, and Lakewood Ranch, Dr. Barre specializes in custom operative and non-operative care for patients of all ages.

“Keeping people active doing what they want to do is a joy every day,” she said. “We live in an area where staying healthy and being active is easy to do year-round with so many outdoor activities.”

Establishing rapport with patients is a priority for Dr. Barre: finding out what their goals are and what they like to do helps guide individualized quality care for her patients.

“New developments in the world of orthopedics help people keep their bones and joints healthier and allow people to stay active longer,” she said. “It’s about preservation.”

The orthopedic field is a frontier for women doctors. Dr. Barre is one of only 6.5 percent of women out of approximately 30,000 surgeons practicing in the field.  She was in the inaugural class of Florida State University College of Medicine as well as the first woman to go into the field of orthopedics in her class. 

“If you are passionate about what you do,” she says, “it shows consistently in quality patient care.”
