Women On The Scene
April Glasco
Founder/CEO at Second Chance Last Opportunity, Inc.
Dr. April Glasco has spent 31 years crafting her leadership skills, but it wasn’t until the last five years that she actually believed in herself. Today, she is immensely proud that her non- profit organization, Second Chance Last Opportunity, Inc. (SCLO) has become one of the most successful charities in Sarasota County.
Many agencies would write off the clients Glasco works with, but she never does because
she’s been there, too. “One woman was in prison for life, but she was released after 22 years and was homeless,” Glasco explains. “She came to me because no one would help her. I found her housing. Today, she has a full-time job and owns a home.” That’s just one of many miraculous SCLO success stories.
“SCLO’s mission is to provide a gateway of hope for individuals in crisis,” Glasco says, whether it’s a job, housing, counseling, or a financial or food crisis. The organization offers six-week Skills for Life classes, a Sisters Circle for all ages (To Grow and To Go), and Out of the Box after-school and summer youth programs. Glasco also developed an online training course, “I AM THAT I AM,” that helps individuals see the potential within themselves, to grow, and to go to a new level in their lives.
Glasco leads by example as she continues to improve herself, having earned an undergraduate degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D., along with becoming an international motivational speaker on women’s empowerment. In the last few years, she’s been fortunate enough to travel to many cities, states, and out of the country.
This past year, when many agencies closed due to the pandemic, SCLO remained open, increased its operations, and served an incredible 1,000 heads of household, along with their children. “We have to help each other,” says Glasco. “People in need shouldn’t be invisible.”
