Sarasota Concert Association Announces Its 2022 Great Performers Series Season

Sarasota Concert Association (SCA) celebrates its 77th season with a dazzling lineup of acclaimed classical artists and ensembles. SCA’s 2022 Great Performers Series season, which runs January 20 through March 15, features the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with cellist Alisa Weilerstein (January 20, 7:30 p.m., at the Van Wezel); pianist Emanuel Ax performing an all-Chopin program (February 1, 7:30 p.m., at the Van Wezel); the Russian National Orchestra with 19-year-old piano sensation Alexander Malofeev (February 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Van Wezel); violinist Benjamin Beilman and pianist Yekwon Sunwoo (February 25, 7:30 p.m., at Riverview Performing Arts Center); and the Takács Quartet with pianist Joyce Yang (March 15, 7:30 p.m., at Riverview Performing Arts Center).

“We’re thrilled to be able to return to the concert hall and resume our Great Performers series in January 2022,” said Linda Moxley, SCA’s executive director. “It’s an exciting season, highlighted by the fact that we were able to bring back three of the artists who were scheduled to be part of our cancelled 2021 season.”

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra with cellist Alisa Weilerstein

World-renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein joins Music Director Jader Bignamini and the Detroit Symphony in a program highlighted by Dvořák’s beloved Cello Concerto and Mussorgsky/Ravel’s rousing Pictures at an Exhibition.

Pianist Emanuel Ax Performs Chopin 

A favorite of Sarasota audiences, legendary pianist Emanuel Ax performs an all-Chopin program, including Sonata No. 3, Scherzo No. 4, a selection of nocturnes and mazurkas, and the Polonaise-fantaisie, Op. 61.

Tuesday, February 8, 7:30 p.m., Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
The Russian National Orchestra with pianist Alexander Malofeev

Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits leads the Orchestra in Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. Nineteen-year-old piano sensation Alexander Malofeev will join the Orchestra for Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Violinist Benjamin Beilman with pianist Yekwon Sunwoo

Benjamin Beilman displays his astonishing virtuosity along with Van Cliburn gold medalist Yekwon Sunwoo in works by Gershwin and Kreisler, as well as Ravel’s dazzling Sonata No. 2 and John Adams’ adventurous Road Movies.

Takács Quartet with pianist Joyce Yang 

Grammy-nominated pianist Joyce Yang joins the internationally renowned Takács Quartet in their celebrated return to Sarasota, performing Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 2, Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1, and Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major.
