USGA Senior Amateur Sectional Qualifier Held at The Founders Golf Club
The Founders Golf Club, known for its picturesque Robert Trent Jones Jr.–designed championship golf course, recently served as the site of a 2019 USGA Senior Amateur Sectional Qualifier. More than 50 men competed, including members of The Founders Golf Club; two members will advance to the 2019 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.
The qualifier welcomed any amateur golfer who had turned 55 as of Aug. 24 and whose USGA Handicap Index did not exceed 7.4 to compete for a chance to move on the Championship, which will be held at Old Chatham in Durham, N.C. later this month.
Members Tim Murphy and Michael Cohen and new Club member Jim Taggart competed. Murphy secured the top spot at the Sectional Qualifier, finishing three under par. Paul Royak from Tampa and Edward Parnell from Altamonte Springs also qualified for the Championship. Don Whittemore from Temple Terrace and Bart Dornier from New Orleans, La., earned spots as alternates. Jerry Rose, the current Founders Golf Club champion who made it to the quarterfinals last year, was exempt from qualification this year and will automatically play in the Championship.
Golf is a core part of life at The Founders Club, Sarasota’s premier golf club community. No tee times are required and crowds are never an issue, since membership is limited to 275. Members can walk the course at their own pace – utilizing Sarasota’s only traditional caddie program – and enjoy the game as it’s meant to be. The Club’s 7,094-yard, par 72 layout features a backdrop of mighty oak, pine and palm trees and is dotted with tranquil lakes, unspoiled wetlands and natural buffers of untamed landscapes.
The Founders Club offers expansive homesites overlooking picturesque preserves, lakes and golf course fairways. Residents of The Founders Club can enjoy a spacious but intimate clubhouse featuring casual and fine dining and a full social calendar, along with a fitness center, with the purchase of an optional Club membership. Also available to all homeowners are Har-Tru tennis courts, basketball and sand volleyball courts and a picnic pavilion. The community features hundreds of protected live oaks and a natural habitat that attracts a variety of birds and wildlife. There are no CDD fees.
The Founders Club is close to Sarasota’s famed Gulf of Mexico beaches and the acclaimed local restaurants, boutiques and arts and cultural venues of downtown Sarasota.
Visitors can stop by The Founders Club Sales Center Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. located at 3001 Founders Club Drive, three miles east of I-75 on Fruitville Road, Exit 210.
