State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) has developed a clinical affiliation with Friendship Centers. Dorothy Nulty, Associate in Science Nursing program manager, worked with Robert Rogers, director of outreach at Friendship Centers, to initiate an affiliation designed to give second level nursing students exposure to community health.
“The experience is giving our students the opportunity to see the nursing role in the community setting as opposed to the role in the hospital setting,” Nulty said. “They are getting the opportunity to work with older adults and to work on therapeutic communication skills.”
Through the affiliation, the students will have the opportunity to broaden their perspectives about gerontology and the multiple generations of older adults. Rogers recently took a group of SCF nursing students on a tour of the Centers’ facilities and introduced them to clients. Nulty said Rogers has been an asset to the students while facilitating the program.
SCF offers the Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The bachelor’s degree program in nursing is designed for registered nurses to increase their qualifications with a BSN. Incoming freshmen can pursue the “BSNin4” option, achieving the ASN and RN licensure as part of a continuous four-year path to the BSN. Nursing coursework is offered at SCF Bradenton, SCF Venice, SCF Lakewood Ranch, and through SCF online.
